NFC is how you tap Maya, GCash, and some access cards with your phone. A lot of budget phones sold in the Philippines look modern and still skip NFC to hit a price. Here is how to check before you queue at the cashier.
Android: the 20-second check
- Open Settings.
- Search the settings bar for NFC. On Samsung it may sit under Connections. On Xiaomi / POCO / Redmi: Connection & sharing. On Infinix / TECNO / Vivo / OPPO: Additional settings or Connection.
- If you see NFC or NFC and contactless payments, turn it on.
- Hold the back of the phone (usually the camera area) to a Maya / GCash terminal that says tap.
If search returns nothing, you almost certainly do not have NFC. Some Chinese ROMs hide it — still rare on PH retail units.
iPhone
iPhone has NFC. You do not toggle a classic NFC switch like Android.
- Apple Pay is the Apple way. Availability depends on your card and Apple’s PH partnerships at the time you read this.
- Some transit and access-card tricks are more limited than Android.
If the question is “can I tap Maya/GCash like Android?”, check the e-wallet app’s current NFC support page — it changes.
Maya, GCash, and terminals
- Terminal must be contactless (the wifi-looking tap icon).
- Phone case with a magnetic plate can kill the field. Remove the plate.
- Hold still for a second. Waving like a beep card sometimes fails.
Spec sheet words to trust
Look for NFC: Yes. Ignore “Google Pay ready” marketing on a listing that also says NFC: No. Ignore “supports beep” unless you know that model.
Shopee titles often copy-paste “NFC” from another SKU. Scroll to specifications, or check GSMArena / the brand’s PH PDF.
Still not working?
| Symptom | Try |
|---|---|
| Toggle missing | Wrong phone, or 4G-only SKU |
| Toggle on, tap fails | Case, dead terminal, wallet not set as default |
| Works at one store only | That store’s terminal firmware |
| Samsung | Set default wallet under Connections → NFC → Contactless payments |
FAQ
Does NFC drain battery?
Negligible compared to 5G and TikTok.
Can I add NFC with a sticker?
External NFC stickers are not the same as phone NFC for Maya. Do not buy “NFC antenna stickers” as a fix.
Is Bluetooth the same as tap-to-pay?
No.
Bottom line
Search Settings for NFC. If it is not there, the phone cannot tap. When shopping, filter for NFC or step up a budget tier — it is one of the few features you cannot add later.
